Cosmetics, Cosmeticians
The concept of cosmetics and make up is certainly one the human race can reckon very well with!
In fact, men and women, around the world have been known to use cosmetics for beauty, protection and even to ward off the evil.
The history of cosmetics dates back to 6000BC. Archaeological evidences found suggest that the Romans, Egyptians and the Asians already used some or the other kind of it. Cleopatra is known to bathe in a milk and rose water for glowing skin… The people in Africa and south India have been known to be the first ones to use kohl- made from soot – under the eye and henna to dye hair. In the Middle East, which was once Persia, make up was put in order to disguise oneself. Some fundamentalists in Islam, however, had forbidden the use of cosmetic.
In China and Japan women were known to colour nails with gum and gelatin.
In Europe, up till the late industrial revolution, lower class people had to work on the fields or in the open. The sun blackened their skins. The higher class society stayed inside, and with the result they were fairer. Powder was thus used to lighten skin colour and look more aristocratic. The red Indians, in North America painted their body with natural colours.
The greatest remarkable influence that can be cited is that of the English theatres and the Hollywood.
The notion of “makeup” and beauty has been linked to the actors and the actresses’ for quite a long time now.
TYPES OF COSMETICS:
Cosmetics can be defined as those products or preparations which are intended for external use on the body. All over the world, some cosmetics and toiletry products have always been in use. Consider some of them:
Soaps and shampoos
Powder
Creams
Kohl/mascara
Lipstick
Eye shadow
Nail colours
Fragrances/perfumes
Lotions
Oils etc
INDIA IMAGE:
As far as India is concerned, it has a rich legacy of the past and a booming market of cosmetics at present. Men and women extensively used products made if of herbs, flowers and other natural stuff for decorating themselves. The make up thus put also had medicinal values like heena and kajal. Women here are said to wear sixteen different types of makeup known as “solah shingar”. The cosmetics and self-care industry currently is witnessing a surge in its market with the entry of the international players. Today, one can buy any branded beauty product from the local shop itself.
Globally, cosmetics, today, is a billion dollar industry with L’Oreal and Revlon being the forerunners. The industry is regulated by the FDA, USA.
Quite a number of controversies have also gripped this sector throughout its history. Apart from being declared as a “taboo” and antisocial, cosmetics in the early 20th century created a furore over killing animals and birds for oil, wax leather, etc.
Nonetheless, the industry has unlimited potential and prospects. For people have always wanted to and will always want to look pretty and handsome!

AIDS in South Africa $29.78 In January 2000, the United Nations Security Council mobilized for the first time ever against an illness: It declared the AIDS epidemic that is galloping through Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean a global catastrophe. Even the US ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, has acknowledged it as,'the greatest single threat to humanity.' the crisis is worst in sub-Saharan Africa, and especially South Africa, which has one of the fatest-growing epidemics in the world: One out of four adults is HIV positive, as are 29% of all pregnant women.Reporting from the frontlines of the daily battle with AIDS consuming hospitals and households across the country, author and journalist Zia Jaffrey stresses that AIDS in Africa is not simply a health issue but an amalgam of economic, political, and social concerns. Taking on Mbeki's administration, first-world governments, the large multinational pharmaceutical companies, and the inimical legacy of apartheid on the country's social cohesion, Jaffrey argues forcefully that not allowing developing nations access to cheap generic drugs nor drastically cutting prices of life-prolonging and AIDS-fighting drugs is tantamount to genocide. In disturbing personal narratives from men and women in South Africa, she reveals how AIDS has recently become the new apartheid. |

Connecting With South Africa (Hardcover) $43.72 Child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Astrid Berg states in her introduction that “South Africa is a microcosm.” It is a modern nation, yet many of its inhabitants follow ancient traditions. It is a nation with a colonial past marked by periods of violence, yet it has managed to make a largely peaceful transition to majority rule. It is a nation with eleven official languages embracing a great diversity of cultures and customs, and yet it is also a land where public debate is vigorous, free, and ongoing. In short, South Africa is a place where connections are being built and maintained—both those among people with long kinship and common culture, and those that reach across historical, racial, and class divides. “The western world is undeniably more advanced in certain areas of science and economic development,” Berg states, “but in other areas it seems to lag behind and could learn from” places like South Africa. In her work with children and infants, Berg has become instrumental in building connections with and among her fellow South Africans of all ethnicities. Based upon Berg’s 2010 Fay Lectures in Analytical Psychology at Texas A&M University, Connecting with South Africa: Cultural Communication and Understanding is both a self-reflective, subjective account and a scientific discourse on human development and intercultural communication. This volume will be warmly welcomed not only by psychoanalysts and those interested in Jungian thought and practice but also by anyone seeking more effective ways to learn from other cultures. Connecting with South Africa provides sensitive direction for those wishing to find healing and connection in a fractured society. |

Guns, Race, And Power In Colonial South Africa $232.17 In this book, William Kelleher Storey shows that guns and discussions about guns during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries were fundamentally important to the establishment of racial discrimination in South Africa. Relying mainly on materials held in archives and libraries in Britain and South Africa, Storey explains the workings of the gun trade and the technological development of the firearms. He relates the history of firearms to ecological, political, and social changes, showing that there is a close relationship between technology and politics in South Africa. |
