How long until hair color lightens/fades?

I dyed my hair yesterday (Ion Color Brillance – 4R – Medium Red Brown). The color came out really pretty and rich and pretty much like the swatch at Sally’s but it’s still a bit darker than I was looking for. This was my first time doing any type of chemical process on my hair for at least 5 years. I have naturally medium brown with some natural redssh blonde highlights. I’m 24 and have slighty dry but pretty much very healthy long, layered hair. I’ve heard that it usually takes a couple days after initially dyeing for the color to get to its true color….lighten/fade/iodize (???) Anyway, I’m asking because I also bought Revlon’s Frost & Glow highlighting kit (Chestnut) and don’t want to do that until I know exactly what the final result of this current all-over-color will be.

if it’s too dark, and you only did it yesterday, wash your hair with dish soap. that sounds weird, but if you do it the day of or the day after it helps to lift the color just a bit. the more your wash your hair the faster it will fade. and also, if you wash your hair with warm/hot water it will fade faster… red is the color that fades the fastest.
you didn’t ask about this, but i’m going to warn you ahead of time… your hair is red, so when you try to highlight it, it’s going to turn orange/yellow… especially since you’re not having a stylist do it for you. you might have to leave it on a bit longer than expected or use a green toner to take out the orange/yellow color.
