Skin Experts re: Vitamin C?

Could anyone tell me about the effectiveness of ascorbic acid on the skin, and whether or not it isn’t as good as high end products (Lancome, Estee Lauder, Shiseido etc) that only contain a fraction of Vitamin C? what is your professional opinion??
