What’s causing the skin around my eyes to get dry and sore?

I’m a 26 year old female and I’ve jut started swimming laps to stay in shape. After a couple days of swimming, I started noticing that the skin all around my eyes was dry and sore. When I use lotion (I’ve tried aloe cream as well as Estee Lauder eye cream), it does help get it moisturized, but it stings for the first few minutes. I do wear goggles when I swim, so I’m wondering if maybe they are causing some chafing. I started using a pair of Leader goggles, and when I noticed the sore skin I went out a bought a new pair of Speedo goggles instead.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what can I do to prevent it from continuing to happen?

The skin around your eyes is extra sensitive. The combination of the goggles and the chlorine is irritating the area. The goggles are pushing pressure onto the area and are maybe rubbing slightly causing tiny openings/abrasions. The chlorine dries out the skin and irritates it further. If you rub your eyes or wipe water away from them often then this can contribute to the irritation too.
First of all you should check with your doctor to make sure that you haven’t developed a skin condition such as eczema around the eyes. If not, then you will need to use a good sensitive moisturiser ideal for the eye area. This means you should try and stay away from perfumed and coloured moisturisers. You can also ask your pharmacist about which creams would be suited to you.
Make sure your goggles aren’t on too tight. Always wash your face with a moisturising sensitive face wash after swimming. Don’t rub the eye area.

I used to suffer from this and still do from time to time when I go swimming. Since I have very sensitive skin and break out in eczema often I have special medications that I use to combat the problem. But I make sure to use a good moisturiser (sorbolene with 10% glycerine) all the time.
