thinking about working at a cosmetics counter?

Does anyone work at a cosmetic counter like MAC or Clinique or any of those? I was thinking about possibly applying but i don’t really know much about the job or what I would need to do. If you know anything about it please let me know =]

Okay, I have worked at a fair share os cosmetic counters & Sephora so here it goes. . .

1: This job asks for experience (now some have zero, but that is rare) most of these girls have either worked at a cosmetic counter before. Others have a cosmetology license, and others like myself did theatre make up or something along those lines.
-Note: MAC requires you work at another counter before theirs, so no one starts at MAC (sorry).

2: Even while most do have background in this all counters will provide training now you have to stay in a trail period for so lone before you receive the intense training. But until then you will receive a training lesson from the store (on store things), and a counter manager/account exec.

3: If you want this job to wear the black attire and do make overs all day your better of getting your cosmetology license, and working at a salon. This job is about selling now while we do give make overs we rarely do them for free (hence while most counters ask for purchase or money upfront). We don’t like wasting our time and effort one someone who isn’t going to help us reach our goals (I am getting there next)

4: As I said our goals now your probably thinking “what?” yes almost every counter has a commission (I will also get there in a second), and goals. Now just like everything else in this economy we are still expected to reach ridiculous goals (make a certain amount of money that day, week, and month). Now when you work there regardless of people not buying as much or finding ways to save money you will almost never reach your goal. Which brings me to the point not reaching your goals will get you laid off there is not nicer way to put that. You also have goals for events, gift, and presell (which is putting items on hold – expect you charge them).

5: Commission, another thing now some counters do not have commission but most do. Now this is the thing that can make what is supposed to be a fun work place to be eh’ not so much fun to say at the least. People will do crazy things to get their commission, and trust me on number of accounts you will be accused (guilty or not) of stealing someones sales (or commission) it will just happen even if you try to avoid it.

6: You cannot bash on someone else’s line even if what you are saying is true- end of story.
-Note: you will have to sign a contract saying you wont as well- usually.

7: This job is about selling, so if your not a strong sales person this job is probably not for you. Unless you can figure out how not being a strong sales person is an advantage. Like to begin with I wasn’t that great at sales pitching, but I knew the product backwards and forwards. I might have not been able to “sell” it, but I was honest in results. Also, now you will be asked (majority of the time- depending on the line and product) to lie about results, or such in such.

8: The one area where you can say the customer is wrong. Which is why I love that the customer can be wrong in cosmetic, and trust me they usually are. You will be amazed how people don’t know their own skin all that well.

9: Clients, another big part about cosmetics you are supposed to build bonds with clients (new and old). You will call them about events, gifts, and so on you are expected to eventually remember them (which you will). Everyone loves the client that keeps on coming back, because they love the product so much. I once had a client who had been to that same counter since the 1980′s, and she eventually became my client and even though I am no longer with that counter she still remembers me (even though she does shop there still).

10: If make up is why you want this job like I said make overs will not happen very often or usually at all. I will say in almost all lines skin care is the number one priority, because 1 it’s the most expensive and 2 like foundation people always come back to restock.

11: The age I should have probably said this earlier, but I forgot you have to be at least 16 years old to work at any of these counters.

12: The counters I just want to point out that in your typical store you have Estee Lauder, Bobbi Brown, Dior, Chanel, MAC, Lancome, Clinique, Elizabeth Arden, Clarins, Origins, and Fragrance. Estee Lauder owns half the store they own Bobbi, MAC, themselves, Origins, and Clinique. So knowing that keep in mind it is easier to move within a cosmetic family than it is to move outside of one. So it is easy to go from Lauder to there different lines, but also keep in mind most of these lines compete with each other. Like the french lines all compete with each other Lancome, Clarins, Chanel, and Dior.
