First Time Makeup Advice?

So my grandmother took me to Clinique and got me eyeshadow, powder, eyeliner, mascara and lip stick. I was really nervous about using anything you could really see so stuck with more natural looking colors. But now I really have fallen in love with it, but looking for other options. The mascara I bought was HORRIBLE, it caked on the ends of the brush, and makes more of a mess than anything. I heard Mayballene has a good one? Also what is foundation for? does it hide blemishes better than just powder? I tend to have some acne, and the powder doesn’t hide that very well. Anyway! Would love some tips.
